Frequently asked questions
Real questions from real dog owners — answered honestly. If there's anything else, we're always one message away.
How it works
How does it actually work?+
It's a 100% natural onyx stone that clips onto your dog's collar or harness. Onyx has been used for centuries as one of the most grounding stones there is — worn close to your dog all day, it gently eases the tension behind the barking, so your dog reacts less because they genuinely feel calmer. No shocks, no chemicals, nothing enters their body. Dogs even respond faster than we do — they don't overthink it, they simply feel it.
How can a stone possibly calm a dog?+
We understand the scepticism — it does sound surprising at first. Grounding stones like onyx have been used for centuries to steady the nerves. Worn all day, the stone's steady presence helps pull a dog's nervous system out of that constant state of high alert. And because a dog has no beliefs or expectations to get in the way, nothing blocks the effect — they just respond. That's why 84% of owners saw less barking within 7 days.
How fast will I see a difference?+
Many owners notice a calmer dog within the first minutes to the first few days. For deeper, long-standing issues (trauma, severe reactivity), it builds more gradually over a couple of weeks of consistent daily wear. The key is keeping it on so calm becomes their new baseline.
Does it suppress my dog's natural instinct to bark?+
Not at all. Dogs are meant to bark — it's how they communicate. This doesn't silence your dog or dull their instincts. It works only on the excessive, stressed barking that comes from anxiety or being on high alert. Their normal, happy "someone's at the door" bark stays completely intact.
Will it work for my dog?
Will it work for a reactive dog?+
Yes — reactive dogs are exactly what it's made for. Reactivity comes from a nervous system stuck on high alert, so your dog fires off before they can think. The onyx eases that underlying tension, so they meet their triggers from a calmer place and react less. It works best worn consistently, and pairs really well with any lead work you're already doing.
My dog is anxious rather than barky — will it still help?+
Absolutely. Barking is just the most visible sign of an anxious dog — what the onyx really does is ease the underlying tension and help your dog feel calmer in themselves. For a nervous dog who simply needs to feel less on edge, it's a lovely fit, whether or not barking is the main issue.
Does it help with fireworks, storms or loud noises?+
Yes — noise anxiety comes from that same spike of tension in a dog already on alert. Worn on the collar, the onyx helps your dog cope better in those moments. Honest tip: for really intense firework nights, it works best alongside a calm, cosy safe space rather than as a magic switch — but it genuinely takes the edge off.
Will it work for a rescue dog with a difficult past?+
It can help a lot. A rescue's reactivity often comes from a nervous system left on high alert by past trauma — and that underlying tension is exactly what the onyx eases. For deep trauma-based cases, it works best alongside gentle training and patience: the calmer baseline it builds makes that work land far better.
My dog barks at other dogs on walks — will it help?+
Yes, that's a very common use. On-lead reactivity comes from a spike of tension your dog can't regulate in the moment. The onyx eases that, so they meet those encounters from a calmer place and react less. It works best worn consistently (not just on walks) so calm becomes their baseline.
Does it work for aggression?+
We're always honest: it isn't a cure for genuine aggression, and serious cases should be worked on with a qualified behaviourist. What it does do is calm the underlying tension that often fuels reactive behaviour — so it's a helpful support alongside proper training, not a replacement for it.
I have several dogs — does each need their own?+
Yes, each dog needs their own pendant — they work independently. If you've got a few barkers, calming the ones that tend to set the others off often settles the whole pack. With multiple dogs, our bundle is worth a look — 15% off with code ONY15 when you order 3 or more.
Choosing & fitting
Which size should I choose?+
The size is based on how much your dog barks, not their body size. The more they bark, the bigger the stone, because a bigger stone gives stronger grounding. 12mm for light barking, 14mm for frequent barking, 16mm for excessive barking. When in doubt, size up.
I have a very small dog — will it be too big or heavy?+
Not at all. Every size is small and light — about the size of a marble — so even a tiny dog wears one comfortably without noticing it. It simply rests on the collar, nothing heavy on their neck. All sizes suit all dogs; you just pick the level that matches their barking.
How does it attach? Does my dog need a collar?+
It clips onto any collar or harness in seconds — 3 sizing rings are included for the perfect fit. No collar? No problem — it attaches just as easily to a harness. It just needs to stay close to your dog.
My dog keeps trying to chew it — what do I do?+
Use the smallest sizing ring so it clips higher and tighter against the collar, sitting snug instead of dangling where they can grab it. Once it's not swinging like a toy, most dogs lose interest. Letting them investigate it for a day helps too. Still going for it? Email us at contact@onypets.com and we'll help.
Can it be left on all the time, or removed at night?+
You can leave it on all the time — it's water-resistant and safe for day and night wear. Taking it off at night is fine too. The only exception: if your dog is particularly anxious at night, keeping it on helps them stay calm through those hours.
Safety & material
Is it safe? Is this like a shock collar?+
It's the complete opposite of a shock collar. There are no shocks, no sprays, nothing that hurts or scares your dog. Shock and spray collars work through fear and pain, which makes anxious dogs worse. This simply helps your dog feel calmer, so they settle because they genuinely feel better. There's nothing kinder.
What is it made of?+
100% natural black onyx — a real stone, nothing synthetic, no coating, no chemicals. Nothing enters your dog's body; it simply rests on the collar and works close to them all day.
Is this real onyx, or just obsidian / dyed stone?+
Good eye — pure, high-grade black onyx is genuinely rare. Ours is real premium natural black onyx, carefully sourced — not the dyed or heat-treated stone common elsewhere (which loses most of its properties), and not obsidian (a volcanic glass with a different structure). That sourcing is the whole reason it works.
The charger & care cloth
Do I need the Stone Charger?+
No — the stone doesn't stop working, and you won't need the charger when starting out. Over several months of daily wear, a natural stone gradually loses a little grounding power. The charger resets it to full strength and amplifies the effect. It's optional and only useful later on — the pendant alone is all you need to start.
Do I need the Care Cloth?+
No, it's not needed to get results. But worn day and night, the onyx gradually picks up dust and oils that can dull its power. The cloth is made specifically for the stone — it cleans it gently and safely (a regular cloth can scratch it), keeping the effect strong. A nice way to protect results long-term, but totally optional.
If my dog's calm has faded, is the product faulty?+
Almost never. When the effect fades after a while, it's usually just that the stone has run down or picked up buildup — not a fault. Recharging or cleaning it brings the calm right back, often stronger than before. If you're ever unsure, just reach out and we'll help.
Ordering, shipping & guarantee
Is there a money-back guarantee?+
Yes — every order is covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Clip it on, give it a proper try, and if you're not seeing your dog calmer, just reach out for a full refund. The only real risk is one more month of barking.
Do you ship to my country? How much is shipping?+
We ship internationally, including the UK, US and beyond — with free shipping. Orders are dispatched within 24 hours and typically arrive within about 7 business days.
My product arrived damaged or broke — what do I do?+
We're sorry to hear that — it shouldn't happen. Just email us at contact@onypets.com with your order number and a photo, and we'll arrange a replacement right away.
